Preschool Program
Professionals in the educational field define the Bethany House Oplenell Montgomery Pre-school Program for 3-5 year old children as a small group enriched environment with an integrated curriculum. Our method of applying our “learning plans”, or curriculum, is learning by doing!
We do not necessarily abstract and isolate information for presentation to the children. We immerse ourselves and the children in the subject(s) with manipulative activities, questions and answers, home assignments, workbook materials, and conversations…all things that reinforce learning in our subject area. The result is a wonderful overlap and interweaving of varied disciplines: mathematics, language, geography, history, music, movement, art, science, and technology. Discovering and learning appropriate behaviors is not separate from the learning experiences of each day.
Bethany House believes that there is nothing more serious, worthy, or critical than the development, cultivation, and achievement of our children. An old African proverb states that “It takes a village to raise a child” and we believe it takes a “healthy village” to raise a healthy child. Well, Bethany House is a major part of that village. In terms of children, Bethany House is the part of the village where parents draw the necessary strength to effect changes within themselves and their children. Bethany House is the part of the village that allows parents the possibility of working together, which at times seems impossible to do alone.
The Pre-school Program helps children develop and strengthen consciousness and pride in themselves as African-American children; it helps them develop and strengthen appropriate conduct, our children listen to learn; it helps them develop and strengthen their competencies; and finally it helps them develop and strengthen caring traits——through the love shown our children, our children learn to feel loved and to love each other.
Our high achieving Pre-school Program has moved to the Northview Heights community. Since 1962, we have produced children that not only excelled in the classroom after graduating from our program but they also have demonstrated a strong sense of community and social responsibility.
